The most recent winner of Bellsouth was Philip Alfred Mickelson in 2006. The professional golfer was born on June 16, 1970 in the USA. He is also sometimes referred to as Lefty for the left-handed swing he has. Being one of the most successful golfers of his generation, he got the victory in three major championships and a total of 29 contests during the PGA Tour. As of the end of 2006, Mickelsons present world ranking is 2nd.
In 1991, Mickelson got the victory in his first PGA Tour championship at the Northern Telecom Open as an amateur. Philip later won a number of PGA Tour tournaments, such as the Byron Nelson Golf Classic and the World Series of Golf in 1996, the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 1998, the Colonial in 2000 and the Greater Hartford Open in 2001 and 2002. Additionally, he shot a round of 59 at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Poipu Bay Golf Course on November 24, 2004.
However, in spite of all these achievements, Mickelson was often described as the best golfer, who has never won at least one major tournament. He frequently had good results in majors, namely in the five-year period between 1999 and 2003 where he got six 2nd or 3rd places. But victory somehow evaded him, sometimes because he took too many risky shots, or missed too many short putts. Nevertheless, Mickelson never despaired and went on training and mastering his skills and his strategies. The victory at Bellsouth in 2006 proves that.
