The International is an American golf tournament, which makes part of the PGA (the Professional Golfers Association) Tour program. The tournament is usually played every year at the beginning of August in Castle Rock, Colorado at the Castle Pines Golf Club, where is has been played from its inception.
The International tournament is a unique game as it has two main differences from other golf matches. Firstly, the competition is not conducted at stroke spay, which is used traditionally; and secondly, it uses a modified scoring system known as the Stableford. This system scores the points according to the results at each hole. The main aim is to score the highest number of points, unlike traditional scoring, where the major objective is to have the lowest possible score. The system was created by Dr. Frank Barney Gordon Stableford.
For 2007 International Tournament it is scheduled to change the days of the games. The competition will be moved to the 1st week of July, the same date change is scheduled for 2008. The International authorities expect that the new dates will draw attention of more top golf players to the tournament, like Tiger Woods, for example. The reason is that the International will be no longer held a week before a major countrys championship.
The tournament has changed its name several times during its unique history. The first game was played in 1986 and had the same name as today - the International. Seven years later the title of the tournament was changed for the Sprint International. From 2000 till 2002 it was known to the public as the INTERNATIONAL Presented by Quest, due to the appearance of the new competition sponsor. In 2003 it was renamed again to the INTERNATIONAL.
Almost all winners of the INTERNATIONAL were Americans, still there are some exceptions. In 1989, Greg Norman from Australia won the International Tournament; in 1991 a Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal became the winner. Later, in 1998, one of the best world golf players Vijay Singh from Fiji managed to become the best. In 2000 the legendary Ernie Els from South Africa made it to the final game, and in 2005 his countryman, Retief Goosen, won the major prize. 2004 was another lucky year for Australian golf fans, as Rod Pampling snatched the purse.
