The first matches were held at Warwick Hills, located in Grand Blank. Beginning from 1969 the Buick Open matches fell off the PGA tour program and several unofficial golf events took place. The majority of them were held at Flint Elks Country Club (also located in Grand Blanc). Only eight years later, in 1977, the Buick Open was again included in the PGA schedule, and in 1978 the event returned to Warwick Hills Country Club. The Buick Open matches are still played there.

There are several interesting traditions connected with the Buick Open. The 17th hole at the Warwick field has one of the most impetuous galleries, where lots of fans gather to welcome their favorite golfers. In 1970 and 1971 no Buick Open golf tournaments were held. The tradition was renewed in 1972, when the competition became known to the public as the Vern Parsell Buick Open, and in 1973, it was renamed into the Lake Michigan Classic. From 1974 till 1976 the tournament was called the Flint Elks Open, and in 1977 simply the Buick Open (the present name). The following three years the name was changed to the Buick-Goodwrench Open. From 1981 the tournament finally got the current name, the Buick Open.
