The tournament is named after a famous golfer – Byron Nelson. During the early days of its history, the EDS Byron Nelson Championship was played at a variety of Dallas courses. In 1944 when the tournament was played at Lakewood Country Club Byron Nelson was the one to win it. One year later it took place at Dallas Country Club. In 1946 it was played at Brook Hollow Golf Club. Then there was a certain period of time during which the event was not contested. Two of its repetitions took place in 1956 at Preston Hollow Country Club. After that in 1957 Glen Lake Country Club became a new home for the tournament. From 1958 to 1967 the event was held at Oak Cliffs Country Club.
