Come the first week of July, 156 of the best golfers on the PGA Tour will convene in White Sulphur Springs, W.V., to battle for this year’s Greenbrier Classic championship, and if history is any sort of indication, the competition will be extremely tight. In two of the tournament’s three years of existence, the champion was crowned in extra playoff holes, and when Stuart Appleby won the inaugural event in 2010, it was by a single stroke. The 2013 Greenbrier Classic is scheduled to take place from July 1-7 at The Old White Course at Greenbrier, and with a $6.3 million purse at stake, no one will be surprised if this event again comes down to the wire.
Last year, rookie Ted Potter, Jr., beat out Troy Kelly to earn his first PGA Tour victory. Potter, Jr., shot 16-under and won the title in riveting fashion by sinking a clutch, four-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole. Perhaps most surprising about the 2012 edition was the poor play of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, who missed the cut in the same tournament for the first time in their professional careers. Certainly, both players would love redemption, and if they compete this year, purchasing 2013 Greenbrier Classic tickets will get you on the course to see them battle live.
