About the Mercedes-Benz Championship
The Mercedes-Benz Championship is an introductory championship on the PGA golf Tour. Only the golfers, who are the winners of some championship on the schedule of the PGA Tour in the previous year, have an opportunity to take part in the event. The Mercedes-Benz Championship has been held at the beginning of January at Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, since 1999. Originally, the championship was staged in Las Vegas, Nevada, from 1953 until 1968. It took place at the Desert Inn Golf and Country Club until 1966, and later, at Stardust Country Club.
more Afterwards, the place for the event was moved to La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, for 30 years, after which the championship transferred to its present location in Hawaii. The first place award is one of the greatest ones during the Tour. Because of the limited number of participants in the event, the prize constitutes 20% of the general prize fund instead of the usual 18%. In the most recent 2006 championship, the first prize constituted $1,080,000 out of the prize fund of $5,400,000.
The most recent winner of the championship (in 2006) is Stuart Appleby, who was born on May 1, 1971 in Cohuna, Victoria, Australia. The son of a dairy farmer in northern Victoria, Stuart used to practice golf by hitting balls on the outdoor run near the house. Appleby became a professional golf player in 1992 and started his golf career on the PGA Tour of Australasia. In 1995, he became a two-time winner of the Nike Tour, which is now known as the Nationwide Tour. He also won the second level mens tour in the U.S. and was eligible for the PGA Tour the following year, which resulted in the fifth position in the money list. Presently, Appleby has been a champion on the PGA Tour for eight times. He was a part of the International Team during the initial three Presidents Cup events, and he is present in the top ten of the Official World Golf Rankings.
The first wife of the golf player, Renay, was murdered in a strange accident not far from a train station in London right after he had missed the cut at the Open Championship in 1998. Appleby married again in 2003 and became the father of a girl in January of 2005.
