About the PGA Championship

Winning the PGA Championship gives many advantages to the golfers. It makes their professional career more secure, especially if they are not yet among the elite sportsmen. The PGA Championship winners are also invited to participate in the other three major tournaments during the following 5 years, and they dont have to qualify once again for the PGA Championship ever. They also receive the right to participate in the PLAYERS Championship for 5 years. The PGA Championship is held at various sports venues.

The 1st PGA Championship game was played in 1916 in Bronxville, NY, at Siwanoy Country Club. The winner, Jim Barnes, received the Wanamaker Trophy and 500 dollars (to compare, the last winner, Tiger Woods, received more that 1.2 million dollars). Originally, the PGA Championship was a match play event, but from 1958 it was played in a stroke play format.

At the beginning of the 20th century golf was played mainly by amateurs. The major purpose of the PGA Championship was to provide a high profile golf tournament and raise the interest to the game among sports fans. A list of special qualification criteria exists for the golfers eligibility.

The PGA Championship can boast of several multiple winners, one of the best golfers in the history of the game. Two players are five-time PGA Championship winners: Jack Nicklaus (won in 1963, 1971, 1973, 1975, and 1980) and Walter Hagen, who won four championships consecutively (in 1921, 1924, 1925, 1926, and 1927). Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, and the 2006 winner Tiger Woods became tree-time PGA winners. More than a dozen golf players won the Championship twice.

The PGA Championship has also some interesting records to mention. The youngest tournament winner was Gene Sarazen. In 1922, he won the game at the age of 20. The oldest winner was a 48-year old Julius Boros in 1968.

The PGA Championship will be held at Southern Hills Country Club (situated in Tulsa, Oklahoma State) in 2007, and in 2008 - at Oakland Hills Country Club (located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan State).
