Excitement in Store for 2014 Wells Fargo Championship
Those in attendance for the 2013 edition of the Wells Fargo Championship were treated to a thrilling finish when then-22-year-old and relative unknown Derek Ernst secured his first-career PGA Tour victory via a one-hole playoff. Ernst and David Lynn, who had made the jump from the European Tour to the PGA Tour for the year, both finished at -8 to force a deciding playoff round for the third straight year at the tournament. In fact, since the Wells Fargo Championship’s debut in 2003, a winner has been decided by playoff on six different occasions. One leading theory usually centers on the notoriously difficult holes 16-18 at the Quail Hollow Club, collectively known as the “Green Mile.”
Back for more in 2014, the Wells Fargo Championship will take place from May 1-4 at its usual Charlotte course. While the tournament is expected to feature most of the world’s top golfers, current World No. 1, Tiger Woods will likely sit out due to recent back surgery that also sidelined him from the Masters. Woods prevailed at the event once before in 2007, and like all of his fellow winners, has yet to win a second at the Wells Fargo Championship.
