Blue Grass Stakes News

Riders Tuning Up for Triple Crown at Blue Grass Stakes

Since its humble beginnings back in 1911, the Blue Grass Stakes has served as an excellent preparatory race for the Kentucky Derby, but make no doubt about it, this race has certainly earned a stellar reputation of its own. The 2013 Blue Grass Stakes will be the race’s 89th edition, and it’s scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 13, at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. This 1 1/8-mile race boasts a handsome purse of $750,000, and this year, fans that purchase Blue Grass Stakes tickets are in store to get a first-hand glimpse at many of America’s top 3-year-old, Grade 1 Thoroughbreds before they head out to participate in “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.”  One major element that separates the race from the Derby is that it takes place on a synthetic surface, as opposed to the dirt at the world-famous Churchill Downs track.

Since the synthetic track was introduced at Keeneland in 2007, the only horse to race in the Blue Grass Stakes and then go on to win the Kentucky Derby was Street Sense in 2007. In 2012, Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux rode Dullahan to a sensational Blue Grass Stakes victory that saw the duo finish with a blazing time of 1:47.94 in front of a record crowd of 40,617 spectators. Owned by Donegal Racing and trained by Dale Romans, Dullahan then took 12/1 odds to the Kentucky Derby before finishing in third place behind I'll Have Another and Bodemeister. Some of the probable starters include Will Take Charge, Uncaptured, Charming Kitten, Dewey Square, Dynamic Sky, Falling Sky, Fear the Kitten, Footbridge, Java's War, Noble Tune, Reporting Star, Rydilluc, Tesseron, Tiz a Minister, Undrafted, and War Academy.
