It is based in the city of Calgary, Canada. 18 private investors originally owned it but in June 1997, Calgary Flames Limited bought it. This company manages the team now. The team is named after a Canadian wrestler, Bret Hart. He was also one of the private investors that founded the club. Calgary Hitmen is part of the Western Hockey League. It belongs to the Eastern Conference and plays in Central Division. The home stadium for Calgary Hitmen is Pengrowth Saddledome. It is one of the three teams that are from Calgary region.
Calgary Hitmen had a rocky beginning but in their third season, they managed to win the central division title. Until now, Calgary Hitmen has won one National Championship, also known as President's Cup, two Scotty Munro Memorial trophies and three Central Division titles. They are two times runner-up in Conference final. Calgary Hitmen was also the first team to win President's Cup along with being league champions, and they represented Calgary in Memorial Cup, first time by any team from Calgary.

Calgary Hitmen holds the record for having highest average number of fans, for a junior team, in a season. Although, they are not as successful as they have been in past but many of their players are playing at the highest level with reasonable success.
