Citi Open Set to Run July 26-Aug. 3 at Fitzgerald Tennis Center
A new winner will be crowned when action begins at the 2014 Citi Open, scheduled to run from July 26-Aug. 3 at the Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Washington, D.C. Due to continued time needed to recover from wrist surgery, last year’s champ and perennial top-10 competitor Juan Martin del Potro will not have a chance to make it two straight at the tournament, confirming that his next expected appearance will be at September’s Malaysia Open. At last year’s Citi Open, del Potro collected his third career win at the tournament, having previously secured repeat titles in 2008 and 2009. As of early July, the Argentina native has competed in just four tournaments, with his first and only win of the year coming at January’s Apia International Sydney.
Of the 11 annual ATP World Tour 500 tournaments, the Citi Open marks the only one held stateside, serving as the perfect primer leading into the Western and Southern Open and US Open taking place in the subsequent weeks. Though many of the world’s top players typically sit out the event, a considerable portion of the top 100 is generally present in the singles and doubles draws, in addition to many of tennis’ exciting up-and-comers.
