CONCACAF Gold Cup is the most important football competition for the men's national football teams which is are governed by CONCACAF. The CONCACAF was formed in 1961 after combining NAFC and CCCF which resulted in a single tournament being held called the CONCACAF championship. The Competition was initially called the CONCACAF championship when it was held in 1963 for the first time and was played every two years. It lasted till 1971 and there was no tournament held from 1973 to 1989. During this time, the top team qualifying for the world cup was named the champions.

Mexico has the record for winning the tournament seven times, the United States have won it four times and Costa Rica has won three times. Canada, Honduras, Guatemala are the other winners of this tournament.
The United States won the inaugural tournament in 1991 which had eight teams by beating Honduras. The final was decided by penalty shootout which the United States won 4-3. Rest of the decade was dominated by the powerful Mexicans who won consecutively three times (1993, 1996, and 1998) The CONCACAF Gold Cup was held in the United States last time from 6-24th of June in 2007. The host was able to successfully defend the title against Mexico 2-1 in the final which was held at the soldier field in Chicago, Illinois. The third place was shared by Canada and Guadeloupe. Now the CONCACAF Gold Cup is one of the major events in football calendar and is watched by a huge audience.
