In a disappointing 2003 season where the Detroit Lions were plagued by injury, something positive came out of a team that lost eleven of sixteen in 03. In the 2004 draft the Lions attacked two positions that they desperately needed, running back and wide receiver: the draft-room onslaught that ensued got them receiver Roy Williams and Running back Kevin Jones. With Williams and second year receiver Charles Rogers coming back from a collarbone injury, Joey Harrington should be able to throw the ball deep to either receiver. When the defense gets sucked into the deep ball, the Lions can go back to the ground with Kevin Jones, an ultra back who is adept at blocking, has a second gear in the open field and can slash through holes at the line of scrimmage. With all of these weapons at his disposal, coach Steve Mariucci is looking to finish the 04 season above .500 and in the playoffs.

The off season improvements for the Lions didnt stop with the offense. A team that ranked near the bottom in pass defense in 2003 reached out and snagged corner back Dre Bly to strengthen their defensive backfield. A playmaker in the secondary, Bly can pick off passes and is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Second year linebacker Boss Baily hopes to improve on his 2003 season in which he had 88 tackles, 2 sacks and an interception, fine statistics for a first year linebacker. With their offensive and defensive improvements, ticket holders will be flooding the gates at Ford field to watch their Detroit Lions try to take back control of the pride.
