The team was founded in 1997 and is one of the eight original WNBA teams and also one of the teams that participated in the WNBA inaugural game. Since their introduction, the Sparks have been a focal point of the league and the team's major star has been Lisa Leslie. The uniform of the Los Angeles Sparks is a golden color with bright purple lines and Sparks written in purple while playing at home and purple with golden yellow lines with Sparks written in golden while playing elsewhere.

The 1999 season was special for the LA Sparks and posted a 20-12 record and it also saw the rise of Lisa Leslie as an emerging star. They won their first playoff game and series too and won over the Sacramento Monarchs. In 2002 again the Sparks had a great record of 25-7 and won against the Liberty to win their second championship.

In 2003 – 2004 two new players Tamika Whitmore and Teresa Weatherspoon, both of whom were players with the New York Liberty joined the Sparks and they again had a great season with a record of 25-9. 2005, though was not very great they had a great season in 2006 and again posted a 25-9 record. The Los Angeles Sparks have a great past record and will be a team worth watching and a great contender in the WNBA finals.
