Olympic Summer Games Archery Information
Archery has historically been used in hunting and combat and has become a very popular kind of precision sport.
Over a seven day period the archery’s competition will be held at the 2008 Summer Olympics. It will start on August 9th and will end on August 15th. The events will take place at the Olympic Green Archery Field, a temporary venue on the Olympic Green, Beijing's Olympic Park. The size targets and the distance away from their target for men and women are same (1.22 m and 70 m). The score for each arrow is defined by the closer distance to the center of the target, with a score of 10 for hitting directly in the center, down to 0 points if the target is missed entirely.
64 archers will compete in both the men's and women's individual competition. In the first three rounds of the individual competition, the archers shoot 18 arrows in ends of 3 arrows, and the archer with the higher combined score advances to the subsequent round. In the final three rounds (quarterfinals, semifinals, and medal matches), the archers shoot 12 arrows in ends of 3 arrows.
Each country provides three archers in the individual competition. They may also compete in the team competition. Medals will be awarded in 4 events: Men's Individual, Women's Individual, Men's Team and Women's Team.
