Especially popular in Asia and Europe today, badminton became a full competition sport at the Olympic Games in 1992. While contemporary badminton first appeared in the mid-19th century, it evolved from the game battledore and shuttlecock, which can be traced back to ancient Greece, China, Japan and India. Michael Ghorayeb invented Badminton as an Olympic sport. Because shuttlecock flight is strongly affected by wind, competitive badminton is always played indoors. Badminton is also played outdoors as a casual recreational activity, often as a garden or beach game.
Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles). Speed, agility and lightning-fast reflexes are essential to the game. It is also considered to be a technical sport, requiring good motor coordination and the development of sophisticated racket skills. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock with their racquets so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents' half of the court. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the ground, and the shuttlecock may only be struck once by each side before it passes over the net.
Badminton competitions at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics will be held from August 9 to August 17. 5 sets of medals will be awarded in the following events: Singles Men, Doubles Men, Singles Women, Doubles Women, and Doubles Mixed.
An NOC may enter up to 3 qualified players (pairs) in each event. A total of 64 athletes will qualify for each singles event and 16 pairs will qualify for each doubles event.
