Summer Games - Wrestling

Greco-Roman wrestling is one of three styles that is contested in the Summer Olympics. According to the FILA, this sport is one of the 4 major forms of amateur competitive wrestling practiced all over the globe today, the other 3 being freestyle wrestling, sambo, and judo.

Almost all European capital cities hosted international Greco-Roman wrestling tournaments in the nineteenth century. A definite sum of prize money was given to the place winners. The sport soon became prestigious in Europe and was the first style that was registered at the modern Olympics, beginning in Greece in 1896 with one heavyweight bout. Greco-Roman wrestling quickly grew in popularity during the twentieth century. The sport has always been featured in the Olympics (except the Paris Olympics in 1900 and the St. Louis Olympics of 1904, when freestyle wrestling first emerged as an Olympic sporting event.

The former USSR, Romania, Bulgaria, Japan, Sweden, and Finland have had the greatest success in terms of competition at the Olympic Games. Alexander Karelin, for example, won 3 Greco-Roman gold medals (in 1988, 1992, and 1996).

At the next Summer Olympics in the capital of China, Greco-Roman wrestling tournaments will be held at the China Agricultural University Gymnasium. The competitions will start on August 9 and will culminate on August19, 2008. Greco-Roman wrestling competitions, as well as freestyle tournaments, are divided into different weight categories. Men will take part in both disciplines, whereas women will participate only in the freestyle events with eighteen gold medals being awarded.
