Rogers Cup Womens Tennis Background

Rogers Cup, formerly known as the Canada Masters, is a prestigious annual tennis championship, which takes place in Canada. The name of the contest depends on the sponsor providing the money for it, for example from 1997 to 2000 it was “du Maurier Open” for both men and women, from 2001 to 2004 “Tennis Masters Canada” for male, and ”Rogers AT&T Cup” for female participants.

The contest for women is a Tier 1 event on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour. The defending champion of this year is one of the hottest tennis stars Justine Henin. Today this talented Belgian tennis player ranked number 1 in the world. Traditionally aggressive all-court playing style helped Justine to conquer 39 career titles and $19 million in prize money.

The year 2009 brings us some significant innovations. First of all, Rogers Cup will be a "1000-level" series event instead of the Masters Series title.

New additions of rules and sanctions are also here to come. In 2011, boys and girls will play the same week six of the nine 1000-level tournaments are planed to be combined.

Especially for the women’s game the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Roadmap 2009 will perform a new design of player turnout, add player suspensions for missed events, put less tournaments on the calendar and give higher money prize.

Rogers Cup Women's Tennis with its vigor, high energy and talented female players is an event never to be missed.
