About the SAP Open Tennis

The SAP open tennis tournament is the 2nd second oldest tennis tournament in United States which was started in 1889 at Old Del Monte Lodge in Monterey, CA. The SAP Open has a long and distinctive history. The SAP tennis tournament was also known as the Pacific Coast Championships. IN 1968 there was an accelerated growth in the tennis open era which had emerged. The tournament grew rapidly during this period and the tournaments growth was great during this period. The sudden growth of the tournament also resulted in more sponsors for the tournament which included some of the big names like Fireman's Fund Insurance, Redwood Bank, Transamerica, Volvo, Sybase, Siebel Systems and SAP.

The tournament has produced many champions over the past 30 years who made their debuts and grand entries with this tournament. Many of these players went to reach the finals and won here. Some of them were Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg and Michael Chang who also went on to win the Grand Slam titles.

The SAP Open tournament is now managed by Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment. It is one of the 63 tournaments played in 30 countries on 6 continents. The word ‘open' is used in SAP to mean that almost anyone can take part in this game and also win it. There is a pre qualification round and a qualifying round prior to the main tournament. The pre qualifying rounds are open for any male player irrespective of the playing level of the player. In 2008 the tournament will be played for the 120th time to produce a new set of SAP open tennis champions.
