The play was written by Tracy Letts. In 2007, the play debuted in Chicago at the renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company. It debuted on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in the winter of 2007 and moved to the Music Box Theatre in spring 2008. Both the Steppenwolf and Broadway productions are directed by Anna D. Shapiro.
