Avenue Q News

Avenue Q History

Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx created Avenue Q as an homage to Sesame Street- a show they had both previously worked for. The musical tackles adult themes such as pornography and racism while having the puppets speak profanities and even engage in puppet sex. Some puppets are clearly parodies of Sesame Street characters (such as Trekkie Monster being an obvious spoof of Cookie Monster) but it is made clear that it has no connection to the children’s show. The puppets are held by actors on stage operating and providing the voice for them. The puppets never address the actor’s presence. There are three human characters that wear bright colors while the puppeteers are dressed in black. The puppets are adults in their twenties and thirties living in run down tenements outside of New York City. Each human and puppet character is on a search for a “purpose” in life, dealing with the problems adults face on an everyday basis.
