Blue Man Group Background Information

The Blue Man Group got their start performing on the streets of Manhattan in 1988. The original members were Phil Stanton, Chris Wink, and Matt Goldman whom worked for a catering company. After performing in small theatres, clubs and underground cabarets, they were eventually commissioned to do a full-length show and have been since been called the best in off-Broadway theatre.

The performance is centered on a trio of mute and bald performers completely covered in blue paint and dressed in plain clothing. These “men” remain expressionless and communicate through intense eye contact and simple gestures. While they may not say much, their awe-inspiring performance allows them to speak for artists, clowns, and musicians everywhere. The Blue Men use objects such as PVC pipes and electric dog toys to fuse rock music (with an exaggeration on percussion) with humor, odd props, and audience participation with perfect brilliance and harmony that have earned them numerous awards. They are interested in exploring the themes of human sight, fractals, plumbing, information overloads, and technology. The audience sitting in the “poncho section” will get sprayed with paint, paper, food and other substances for a fun and messy time.
