Cyrano De Bergerac on Stage
Cyrano de Bergerac was a French dramatist born in Paris. He is well known for the many works of fiction which have been based on his life story. Cyrano de Bergerac is the most notable play written by the French poet Edmond Rostand and published in 1897.
It’s an unhistorical tale of romance and tragedy with the central character, Cyrano, a famous swordsman and a poet-playwright. He falls in love with the beautiful, strong-willed Roxane. Cyrano can never declare his love for her because he is too ashamed of his giant nose.
more When he learns that Roxane loves the handsome Christian, his friend, Cyrano pens poetry and love letters to Roxane on Christian’s behalf. After many years the truth is revealed.
The play has been adapted for cinema several times. Cyrano de Bergerac was last staged on Broadway in 1984 - in a Royal Shakespeare Company production. David Leveaux (Fiddler on the Roof, Nine, Jumpers) will back Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac on Broadway this season. He will direct the revival of classic romance, which was translated and adapted by Anthony Burgess (A Clockwork Orange). Academy Award and Tony Award winner Kevin Kline will play the title role of Cyrano, co-starring with Golden Globe Award winner Jennifer Garner as Roxane, and Tony Award nominee Daniel Sunjata, as handsome soldier also in love with Roxane.
