George Carlin earned his prestigious spot in the world of stand-up comedy through this ticket—highly irreverent routines. He displayed his wit by touching on religion, language, politics, even natural disasters and this bought him a ticket to success. His attacks were sharp and rather caustic. Though he was a high school dropout and went instead to the Air Force afterwards, the smartness in his humor cannot be denied.
“The Seven Words You Cannot Say On Television” was the routine which served as Carlin’s ticket to extreme popularity.
However, he also gained legal notoriety out of this act and was arrested after doing one public performance. A landmark ruling later on stated that Carlin’s material was indecent and should be restricted broadcast so that children wouldn’t have the chance to watch them.
Aside from stand-up comedy, George Carlin also got his ticket to success from becoming a regular guest on Johnny Carson’s show as well as doing several albums on the side.
