Hitting the stage in 2007 is the classic musical loved by many, Grease. In this Broadway revival, audiences get to experience the characters up close and personal. A story based on groups of teenagers in the 1950’s with this kind of plot it’s sure to please people of all ages. The teens in this performance work through a great deal of issues that teenagers run into on a regular basis including love, friendship, teen rebellion, teen pregnancy, gang violence and sexual exploration in adolescence.
Other issues that you will see in this musical are class-consciousness and conflict. This is an issue that is still very relatable today for children, teens and adults alike. Sandy, the main character is much more prim and proper than the rest of the characters in the movie, which are referred to as “Greasers” who aren’t shy to acting out in public and telling it like it is. The main characters in the Broadway play that play the teenage boys are in a gang called “The Burger Palace Boys” while the girls are known as “The Pink Ladies”.
The main plot of the story is about a teen girl named Sandy whom had a small fling with a boy named Danny the summer before they returned to their senior year of high school. Danny happens to be the leader of the Burger Palace Boys while Sandy is a soft-spoken girl with high moral value. Their fling ended with the summer with many things left undone. When she comes to his high school with as a new student, Danny plays it cool to keep up his reputation. When Sandy and Danny reunite their romance, Sandy is taken back by his speed when it came to the physical aspect of their relationship. She was focusing more on her feeling for him.
The opposite personalities became a major issue in the relationship that Danny and Sandy shared. Danny’s crew and the Pink Ladies looked upon Sandy as being too uptight while Sandy looked at the Burger Palace Boys and The Pink Ladies to be too loose. In an attempt to transform Sandy, a few of the Pink Ladies invite Sandy over. Going from pastel skirts and ponytails, they soon had her in tight black jeans with bright red lipstick. She was turned into Danny’s dream girl in just a few moments. Danny learned how to respect her and she learned to lighten up a bit. It was true love at last.
This Broadway revival of the cult classic Grease is something that everyone should catch. You’ll want to see Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, Frenchy and Kenickie among other classic names that you remember from the start of the great musical in the 70’s. Beginning in July, you will have your chance to watch the performance of Grease live and up close and see the classic songs, performed including “Summer Nights”, “Greased Lightning”, “Born to Hand Jive” and “We Go Together”. It’s sure to have to singing for weeks after.
