Mamma Mia! Background Information

Based on the songs by Sweden’s ABBA, one of the most popular international pop groups of all time, the musical Mamma Mia! was created by Judy Craymer. She met ABBA’s songwriters Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson in 1983 when they were working on another musical called Chess. Craymer realized the great potential ABBA’s songs had in being translated to theater. After some convincing, Ulvaeus and Anderson agreed to do the musical. Catherine Johnson wrote the book for the musical in 1997 and in 1998 Phyllida Lloyd took on the director position. The musical premiered in London in 1999 bringing ABBA’s records to the top of the charts once again.
The musical contains hit singles by ABBA such as “Super Trouper”, “Dancing Queen”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, and “Thank You for the Music”.
