Henry Higgins the egotistical, grumpy old senior lecturer of phonetics proudly boasts to his contemporary acquaintance the Colonel Pickering that he believes that he can successfully teach any person to speak in proper English . He further states that he can do it so well that the person would easily be mistaken for a duchess.

Selected as his guinea pig is one cockney speaking young lady by the name of Eliza Doolittle. Eliza possesses a rather strong Cockney accent and is flowers vender on the street. Upon hearing all this boasting done by Mr. Higgins Eliza discovers how to locate the professors home and offers to pay him for the speech lessons. She would like to learn to speak better so that she can by employed in a flower shop instead of selling the plants on the street.

Pickering becomes intrigued with the idea and offers a wager that Henry cannot comply with his claim. Higgins decides to take Eliza on as a student free of charge as a means of challenging his skills as an educator. Eliza's father turn up three days later supposedly to defend his daughter's virtue, however, in actuality he is there to extort money from Mr. Higgins for which he succeeds to the tune of £5.

Eliza undergoes many variety of speech instruction such as talking with marbles in her mouth or endeavoring to recite sentences such as "In Hertford, Hereford, Hampshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen". An argument shortly develops between Higgins and Eliza forcing her to walks out on Him. The following day Higgins begins searching for Eliza and when he finds her attempts to talk her into returning to him.
