Qualcomm Stadium, formerly known as San Diego Stadium, is located in San Diego, California. It is home to the San Diego Chargers and the San Diego State University Aztecs. The stadium was built in 1967 at a cost of $27.75 million and had an initial capacity of 53,000 seats. In August of the same year, the San Diego Chargers played their first game in the new stadium.
The stadium underwent major expansion in 1984, raising the total seats to 61,000 and adding 50 private suites. Qualcomm Stadium has hosted various international events such as 3 Super Bowls, 2 World Series (it is the only stadium ever to host the Super Bowl and the World Series in the same year, 1998), Holiday Bowl, Baseball All Star Games and Major League Soccer Games.
In addition to these sporting events, the stadium has hosted major concerts including those of the Rolling Stones, Billy Joel and Elton John. Jehovah's Witnesses District Conventions also are conducted here. American Idol held some of its 2007 auditions. In 1997, 10,500 new seats, 34 private suites, club level seating and 4 lounges were added. Along with that, food service was upgraded and 2 new video screens and a practice facility for the home team were added. .
