Shea stadium is home to the New York Mets. It is located in New York City. It has been in operation since 1964 and is one of the oldest ballparks in Major League Baseball. Shea stadium is being replaced by Citi Field in 2009. The last ever season of baseball will be played on September 28th, 2008. The stadium’s capacity is currently 71, 000.

Its history goes back to 1960 when the National League agreed to build a new stadium. In 1963, the construction was delayed and finally the Shea Stadium was opened on 17th April, 1964. The stadium is circular in shape and forms a perfect circle around the field. Other impressive features are the scoreboards and bullpens.

Shea Stadium was constructed to be converted to football Stadium but New York Jets football team used the Giant Stadium so Shea Stadium remained to serve the baseball team.

The stadium has been painted blue with neon lights to attract people and tourists. The seats were first wooden painted with different color but then they were replaced by multiple colored plastic seats. The capacity of the stadium was decided to be 90,000 by expanding it into grandstand but the idea was dropped as the stadium would be unable to support it. It hosts concerts as well as sporting events.
