New Format in Store for Dave Matthews Band 2014 Summer Tour

January 14, 2014 by Amy

DMB 2014 Summer Tour Dates

A whole new kind of concert experience is ahead from the ever-touring Dave Matthews Band. Though the group has been a staple of the summer tour circuit for over two decades and counting, they've made it a habit to keep fans guessing year after year thanks to unpredictable setlists and of course, trademark jam sessions.

With that in mind, 2014 summer tour dates were officially announced for "A Very Special Evening with Dave Matthews Band," and will cover North America from May-September. The added twist this year will be the introduction of two separate sets for each show, one acoustic and one electric. Different band configurations will be implemented as needed, allowing fans to take in a unique performance throughout the entire DMB tour.

In a statement released by DMB, Dave Matthews personally revealed the thought process behind the new format. "I was talking to Carter about how much I still like just sitting around playing music together," Matthews said. "Our shows are loose, but we started thinking that maybe this summer we should make them looser and bring some of that feeling to the stage. It seems like the opposite of a safe plan, so why not?"

While fans will likely recognize most of the scheduled tour stops, a few dates in particular are worth noting. In the absence of the usual Alpine Valley shows, Dave Matthews Band will headline Milwaukee's Summerfest on July 2 at the Marcus Amphitheater, and two nights later, will make its debut at the renovated FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island in Chicago, July 4-5.

Two lucky venues will host DMB for three nights, including Berkeley's Greek Theatre, Aug. 22-24, as well as the famed Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Wash., Aug. 29-31. The Gorge shows also will exclusively feature a supplementary "Caravan Stage" for other artists selected for the bill.

Prior to the tour's launch on May 16 at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in Texas, DMB will play a handful of shows in Australia in April. The trip will include performances at the West Coast Blues N Roots Festival (April 13) and Byron Bay Bluesfest (April 19-21) along with other acts like John Mayer and John Butler Trio, in addition to solo shows in Wales (April 15) and Melbourne (April 17) with opener, Gary Clark Jr.
