ALCS Teams Set
Their paths to the MLB Playoffs 2014 were quite different, but when it came to securing a spot in the American League Championship Series, just three games were needed for both the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals. With each franchise advancing in rather impressive fashion, the 2014 ALCS will feature a never-before-seen postseason matchup.
A quick look at the playoff history of both largely explains why they’ve never met, as the Royals are back in the postseason for the first time since 1985, making just the eighth appearance overall for the franchise, while the Orioles’ last ALCS appearance was in 1997. Historically, Baltimore has fared better than KC, boasting seven trips to the World Series alone and three titles to show from it, though the last was back in 1983.
The squads met seven times during the regular season, though all occurred during the first half of the year. The Royals claimed four, including two at Camden Yards, and if the ALDS was any indication, KC should have no problem once again competing predominantly on the road, where it posted a better away mark (47-34) than home record (42-39) during the regular season. On the flip side, the Orioles collected 50 wins at home in 2014, the second-most in the American League behind the now-eliminated Los Angeles Angels.
