Waitress on Broadway
The stage adaptation of Adrienne Shelly’s beloved 2007 film Waitress will make its Broadway debut in March 2016. The musical is poised to be a hit, thanks in large part to both a celebrated cast and music by GRAMMY nominee Sara Bareilles.
Although fans will need to wait a few months to catch live performances of Waitress at New York’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre, Bareilles released her own version of the soundtrack on Nov. 6. Although some of the songs have reportedly been reworked to sound more like Sara Bareilles hits than songs from a musical, the record gives Waitress fans a preview of what they can expect when the show opens next spring.

Tony Winner Jessie Mueller to Star in Waitress on Broadway
The Tony Awards’ 2014 winner of Best Actress in a Musical, Jessie Mueller, will be the leading lady in the upcoming Waitress Broadway production. The Illinois native most recently appeared on Broadway as the title role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, for which she earned rave reviews in addition to Tony, Drama Desk, and GRAMMY Awards. Mueller has already been perfecting her upcoming role as the star waitress, Jenna, during the show’s recent tryouts in Boston.

Former Jersey Boys star Drew Gehling will play Dr. Pomatter, and “Orange Is the New Black” actress Kimiko Glenn will appear as another waitress, Dawn.

Waitress One of Many Tony Awards Contenders This Broadway Season
With Jessie Mueller in the starring role, it’s highly likely Waitress could be up for some major awards come next summer. The forthcoming musical will have some significant competition, though. Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Hamilton has been one of the most critically and commercially acclaimed theater events in years, and the new Gloria Estefan bio-musical, On Your Feet!, has been popular with critics and fans since it began previews in October. Other strong musicals opening this season include Allegiance, starring George Takei and Lea Salonga, and the stage adaptation of American Psycho, starring Benjamin Walker.
