Taylor Swift Makes Billboard History Ahead of 1989 World Tour

November 20, 2014 by Alyssa

Billboard News

Although the upcoming Taylor Swift tour doesn’t launch until May 2015, the seven-time GRAMMY winner has been keeping her name in music news headlines since her latest album, 1989, dropped on Oct. 27. In the latest update from Billboard on Nov. 19, Swift has now become the first female solo artist to replace herself at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with her latest single, “Blank Space.”

The new song made its debut at No. 13 a week earlier, but then jumped 12 slots to replace 1989’s lead single, “Shake It Off,” at the top of the popular songs chart. “Blank Space” reached No. 1 after Swift released the song’s much-discussed music video poking fun at her own very public dating history.

Swift’s Hot 100 milestone is just the latest in an already illustrious year for the country-turned-pop star. 1989 just passed the two-million-sales mark in its third week on the chart. This number is even more impressive considering 1989 so far is--and could remain--the only 2014 album to reach Platinum certification (one million sales), which Swift accomplished easily in the album’s first week. As if those sales milestones weren’t enough, Swift already made Billboard history in early October when she was named the magazine’s Woman of the Year, becoming the only act to snag the title twice.

Starting on Dec. 13, Swift will also bring her star power to a different arena when the GRAMMY Museum opens its new exhibit focused entirely on the award-winning musician. The Taylor Swift Experience will be open through May 10 next year at the Los Angeles museum, and it will feature a collection of personal items from the icon, including instruments, handwritten lyrics, memorable outfits, and more. Swift is the latest in a line of influential female solo artists to get the GRAMMY Museum treatment, following icons like Donna Summer and Whitney Houston.

If you can’t wait to see the Taylor Swift tour next spring and summer, the musician is scheduled to appear on the lineup of Jingle Ball concerts in Los Angeles (Dec. 5) and New York (Dec. 12) this winter. On Nov. 23, fans in L.A. can also see Swift perform “Blank Space” on stage live at the American Music Awards alongside fellow performers and friends Selena Gomez and Lorde, in addition to others like One Direction, Imagine Dragons, and more.
