MLB Opening Day 2023: Schedule, Dates, Starting Pitchers

February 20, 2023 by Stephen Spiewak

MLB Opening Day 2023

MLB Baseball

The journey of 162 games begins with a single nine-inning afternoon.

MLB Opening Day for 2023 is nearly upon us following an offseason in which Aaron Judge, the game’s most prolific slugger, decided to stay with the New York Yankees while numerous other key free agents signed with new teams.

Right-handed pitcher Jacob deGrom is likely to pitch on Opening Day for the Texas Rangers after signing a five-year deal in the offseason. deGrom won two Cy Young Awards for the New York Mets and  started on Opening Day from 2019-2021.

The defending World Series champion Houston Astros will trot out a new Opening Day starter in 2023, after Justin Verlander left to join the Mets. Frambler Valdez likely will get the nod this year after boasting a 17-6 record and 2.82 ERA a year ago.

With Carlos Correa (finally) signing with the Minnesota Twins, Dansby Swanson joining the Cubs and Xander Bogaerts inking a deal with the Padres, there is no shortage of storylines involving the game’s biggest stars as Opening Day approaches.

However, baseball aficionados know that Opening Day is less about individual players and more about the traditions that sustain fan bases year after year. The short days and cold nights of winter months without the national pastime give way to spring training and eventually, baseball’s return.
