Angelina Maria DiFranco, popularly known around the music world as Ani DiFranco, is a very prolific artist and is a great singer, guitarist and song writer. This musical genius has released about nineteen albums till date and is considered to be a feminist icon by many people. She has got popular only through her rigorous touring schedule and sheer determination and commitment towards her ideals as she did not have the backing of major label support or a great hit single. She is now widely known for her punk-folk music and her songs carry the thoughts and ideologies of female icons like Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell etc.
DiFranco, at the tender age of 18, started a recording company of her own called “Righteous Records” in 1989 and it is now re-named as Righteous Babe Records. The National Organization for Women Conference held in Albany, NY presented her with the “Woman of Courage Award” and she was the first ever musician to receive this award. Many of the songs written and composed by Ani DiFranco are related to social issues like abortion, racism, poverty, war, sexism, sexual abuse and so on. DiFranco had given birth to a daughter, Petah Lucia, in January 2007 and had restricted giving concerts as she was spending a lot of time with her lovely girl child, but in 2008, she is on a winter and spring concert tour across America.
Ani DiFranco is an expert guitar player and is well known for her staccato style and rapid fingering skills while playing guitar. The sophisticated lyrics and the delivery of the lines in speaking style that has rhythmic vibrations have all received praises both from the critics as well as the masses alike. She has been consecutively nominated four times as the Best Recording Package at the Grammy awards since 2003 and has also won the award in the year 2004.
