Seger took up music seriously in 1961 in Detroit, being a member of The Decibels. While playing with the group, he got acquainted with Punch Andrews, who later became his manager and music producer. Then he came back to Ann Arbor, where he worked with the Town Criers, later Doug Brown and the Omens. It was this band. In 1965 he presented his first single for the Cameo-Parkway Records.

During his music career, Seger tried himself in different genres and subgenres (e.g. glam metal, grunge, alternative rock, rap metal, hard-core etc.).
