Coco Montoya is a professional blues guitarist and former member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers band. His career started in the middle of the ‘70s after Albert Collins asked him to join his group as drummer. Collins taught Montoya his "icy hot" guitar style. The two musicians remained friends even after Montoya left Collins' group.
In the beginning of the ‘80s, John Mayall once heard Montoya playing guitar in one of Los Angles bars. Shortly after, Mayall asked Coco to join their new band Bluesbreakers, where he remained for the following ten years.
In the early ‘90s, Coco Montoya decided it was time to begin his solo career. The musician has recorded six highly acclaimed blues albums, including Gotta Mind To Travel (1995), Ya Think I'd Know Better (1996), Just Let Go (1997), Suspicion (2000), Can't Look Back (2002), and the latest Dirty Deal (2007).
On his new CD Dirty Deal, which was released on January 16, 2007, Montoya uses blues as a blasting off point for his wonderful music. He attacks each of the eleven compositions with deep feelings and ferocious energy. The album was produced by Barrere and engineer Roger Cole. It is probably the rawest and most stripped-down recording.
Coco now continues an intense touring schedule including major festivals worldwide. According to Guitar World, Coco Montoya is at the forefront of the contemporary blues world.
