Jack Johnson News

About Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson grew up on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. His father, Jeff Johnson, was a famous surfer in the islands. He began surfing at age 5 and became the youngest, at age 17, to make the finals at the Pipeline Masters. He realized there that the competitiveness was too much for him. He suffered from a surfing accident that year and while he was recovering he rekindled an interest in music. He had started playing guitar when he was 14 years old, his first songs being “One” by Metallica and the opposite “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens. He began writing songs during his college years at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he majored in film. He met G. Love and recorded the track “Rodeo Clowns” for G. Love’s album Philadelphonic. The track attracted Ben Harper’s producer, J.P. Plunier who took Jack from making surf films to releasing his first album, Brushfire Fairytales in 2001.
His music has been influenced by Nick Drake, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Ben Harper, Neil Young and so on.
