Jay-Z Background Information
Jay-Z, born Shawn Corey Carter in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1969 went from impoverished, single-parent child with a dubious academic profile, to the most successful rap artist and producer in history. Although once an alleged drug-dealer, twenty years on he has become a highly prominent businessman, voted, with Beyoncé, the most influential ‘Power Couple' of their time.He has been sought after for his expertise on ‘what's hot and what's not' by marketing moguls such as Anheuser Busch.
more With his finger firmly on the pulse and an almost instinctive feel for the zeitgeist, Jay-Z has produced Grammy-winning music, has his own line in clothing, has a string of nightclubs, two record companies and a large share in an NBA team, The New Jersey Nets.
He has worked with such music icons as Dr. Dre, Eminem, Linkin Park and Beyonce, with whom his ten-year relationship has survived against all odds. He's produced and worked with countless other members of the Hip Hop world and has dubbed himself The United Nations of the genre, mainly due to the historical reconciliation between him and Nas and other warring rappers in 2005 at the annual concert ‘Powerhouse'. Jay-Z's style is effortlessly lyrical, handling a multitude of topics with great verbal dexterity, although his mainstream rap style is often criticised by the ubiquitous purists. He has released twenty albums in so many years, eleven of them solo, four collaborated and five of which are compilations. His third album ‘Hard Knock Life' hit the ceiling in 1998, ensuring his place in Hip Hop history. His best album, according to the critics, is ‘The Blueprint', produced in 2001 and coincidentally released on the same day as the World Trade Center Disaster.
He's had two number ones in the United States; ‘Crazy in Love' with Beyoncé and the 2007 hit, ‘Umbrella' with Rihanna. He's also won Grammies for ‘Hard Knock Life', ‘Big Pimpin', '99 Problems' and ‘Numb/Encore', one track on a collaborative collection with rock band Linkin Park. He continues to work with up-coming artists and although he has retired, he's far from finished.
