The History of Julie Andrews
Julie Andrews is a much loved English actress with a string of awards to her credit. In a career spanning more than half a century, she has acted in many hit movies, Broadway musicals and top rated television specials. Born as Julia Elizabeth Wells on 1 October in Surrey, England, she made her Broadway debut at the age of 19, in ‘The Boyfriend.' She rose to fame after acting in successful Broadway musicals such as My Fair Lady and Camelot.
In 1964, she got the opportunity to act in her first musical film Mary Poppins which earned her an Academy award for Best Actress. Her next movie, The Sound of Music in 1965, became one of the most successful movies of all time. She also starred in many top rated television specials and has won 7 Emmy Awards. She has also received five Golden Globe awards and became the first actress to win the special Tribute award of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1989.
Her immense talent and dedication to her work has continued to earn her many more awards. In 2000, Queen Elizabeth II made her a Dame Commander of the British Empire. Julie Andrews showed another aspect of her talent when she wrote best selling children story books including: Mandy and The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles. Recently, she also acted in the movie The Princess Diaries and lent her voice for the character of Queen Lillian in “Shrek 2.” Her heart-winning performances and natural elegance has made Julie Andrews one of the greatest cultural icons of our times.
