KC and the Sunshine Band was formed in 1973 and they played funk, disco and R&B. Richard Finch and Harry Wayne Casey, a worker at a record store and part time worker at TK Records, Miami. They were both advised to start their group after the production of their demo. After some time other members were added to include Jerome Smith on guitar and Robert Johnson on drums, both were musicians at the TK studio.
Their first two singles had little impact and it took a side writing and music production project with George McCrae to take Casey and Finch's song to the limelight. The song Rock you baby, with Smith on guitar was a hit during 1974 with over 11 million copies sold. Another song Queen of the clubs was a hit in England. In 1975, the KC and Sunshine Band released a self titled album “KC and Sunshine Band, which contained the track ‘get down tonight' which was to become their first major US hit. It topped R&B charts and ‘That's the way I like it' also became a number one hit in November, 1975. The group preformed well in the 76 Grammy Awards. This spurred them to release the ‘Part 3' album later in 1976. Their success was to last till their fifth album in 1979. Please don't go, was their last hit and was the first number 1 hit of 1980.
The next two albums had little success and the bad broke up in 1981. In 1982 a track recorded before the split up called ‘Give it up' of the album, ‘All in a nights work' was released and was successful in the UK and two years later it was on the Billboard top 40 in the US. In 1985, Casey eventually retired after the limited success of Mecca Records that he had formed. In 1991 Casey came out of retirement and formed a group with new members and began tours. A number of compilation records were released with a few new materials under Rhino Records. Most of the original members of KC and the Sunshine Band are now dead. The band made a come back in 2001 and have undertaken a number of tours and performances with the last performance being in Las Vegas at Buffalo Bill's Casino. This was on 26th January 2008.
