Mana News

Mana Information

Mana is a popular rock group from Guadalajara, Mexico. The band’s career started about three decades ago and they are still very influential in music. Their work is a mixture of hard rock, calypso, reggae, pop, funk-rock, and Latin tunes. Originally named Sombrero Verde (that can be translated as Green Hat), the band appeared in 1980. The group began its music career by singing covers in English, and later added Spanish songs to the repertoire. The following year Sombrero Verde recorded their first album under the same name. In 1983 followed the second album “A Ritmo de Rock”. A couple of years later the band reorganized under the name of Mana (which means a "supernatural force" in Polynesia). Fher Olvera became the lead vocalist of the group, brothers Juan Diego and Ulises Calleros played the guitars, and Alex "El Animal" was on drums. Together they released a new album in 1986, followed by Falta Amor in 1990 under Warner. It did not become a hit right away, however, during the following year one of their recent album’s tracks "Rayando el Sol" became a smash single. Mana started their tour of more that 250 concerts in Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. In 1991, two new members joined Mana, Iván González and César "Vampiro" López, on keyboards and guitar respectively. The following year they wrote ¿Dónde Jugarán los Niños, which proved their rock movement forerunners’ status in their home country. Again, Mana went on 268-concert tour, but this time the band visited seventeen countries, including Switzerland. In 1994, Iván González and César López (who was later replaced by Sergio Vallín) left Mana. But the trio continued to play and soon released a new album titled Maná en Vivo. Three years later, the band released Sueños Líquidos, which was recorded in Puerto Vallarta. The album became a hit in 36 countries simultaneously. In 2002, the fifth album of the band was released. Named Revolución de Amor, it collected Mana’s fourth Grammy Award (Mana received their first annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2000 for Best Pop Performance by Group with Vocal for their song "Se Me Olvidó Otra Vez"). In 2006, Mana wrote their sixth album called "Amar Es Combatir", which reached #4 on the Billboard Top 200 during its first week. Over 60,000 copies were sold in the first week. The new single "Labios Compartidos" reached the top of the music charts. At the 2006 Latin Grammy Awards, Mana received the President's Award for "their musical accomplishments". The same year, Mana received the awards for Best Video for the song “Labios Compartidos" and for Best Rock Artist at Latin MTV Awards. The current members of Mana include Fher Olvera, Alex González, Sergio Vallín, and Juan Diego.
