In 1981, Metallica was formed in Los Angeles after drummer Lars Ulrich posed an ad in a newspaper. Before Metallica allegedly “sold-out” their early releases placed them under the ‘Big Four” of the thrash metal sub genre along with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. The underground music community embraced Metallica and the 1986 release Master of Puppets is said to be the influential thrash metal album. Debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 with their 1991 self-titled album is what put Metallica on the mainstream map. The album is ranked as the 25th highest selling album in the United States. The album was a direction toward the alternative rock mainstream and with the release of Load in 1996, fans were wondering why Metallica sold out the thrash for all the cash.
All in all, Metallica has released eight studio albums, two live albums, two EP’s, twenty-two music videos, and forty singles since its start. They have won seven Grammy Awards, have four albums peak at number one on the Billboard 200, and sold over 100 million records worldwide.
September 12, 2008 brings Metallica’s latest album, Death Magnetic, to stores. The album was produced by Danzig, Slayer, System of a Down and Slipknot producer Rick Rubin. Their first single will be “The Day That Never Comes”. They are going on the Death Magnetic Tour starting on October 21, 2008. Opening and supporting bands include The Sword, Lamb of God, Machine Head and Down.
