Nelly Furtado Background Information
Singer, producer, songwriter, and instrumentalist of Portuguese descent Nelly Kim Furtado came to fame in October 2000 with the release of her debut record entitled Whoa, Nelly!. The album featured her Grammy Award-winning song “I'm like a Bird”. Following the release, Nelly headlined the Burn in the Spotlight tour and made an appearance on Moby’s Area:One tour.
The record became an international success that was primarily supported by three singles, “I'm like a Bird”, “...On the Radio (Remember the Days),” and “Turn off the Light”. The album received 4 Grammy nominations. Her debut single won the award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Nelly’s work was critically acclaimed for the innovative mixture of different sounds and genres.
The artist’s second record, entitled Folklore, was released in the fall of 2003. The final track of the release, “Childhood Dreams”, is dedicated to Furtado’s daughter. The record includes the single “Força”, which means “strength” or “carry on” in Portuguese). It is the official anthem of the 2004 European Football Championship. Nelly performed this song in Lisbon at the championship’s final, where the Portugal national team participated. Other singles of the release include “Powerless (Say What You Want)” and “Try”. However, this record was not as successful as the debut one. It can be partly explained by the album’s less “poppy” sound.
The singer’s third album was released in the summer of 2006. Named Loose, it has become her most successful album so far. 4 singles were released in different regions of the world: the Portuguese “Promiscuous” (featuring Timbaland), the Spanish “No Hay Igual” (featuring Calle 13), the Latin “Te Busqué” (featuring Juanes), and the dark pop single “Maneater”. The song “Promiscuous” won a 2006 Billboard Music Award in the category Pop Single of the Year. In this record, which was primarily produced by Timbaland, Nelly is experimenting with sounds from hip-hop, R&B, and 80s music. The singer categorized her record’s sound as punk-hop, and described it as “modern, poppy, and spooky”. Furtado attributed the youthful sound of her record to the presence of her 2-year old daughter. The album reached number 1 in several countries around the world, including the US and Canada. The most popular no. 1 hits include “Promiscuous”, “Say It Right”, “Te Busqué”, “Maneater”, and “All Good Things (Come to an End)”. The record received many positive reviews from critics.
In 2007, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake were featured on the hit single “Give It To Me”, which became her 3rd no. one single in the United States and second in the United Kingdom. In February 2007, the singer embarked on the Get Loose Tour. On April 1, 2007, Nelly was a performer at and host of the 2007 Juno Awards. Furtado won all 5 awards for which she was nominated, including “Single of the Year” and “Album of the Year”.
