Grammy Award-winning American rock group Rage Against the Machine (or RATM for short) is noted for their mix of hard rock, hip hop, punk, and funk. They are also well-known for their explicit revolutionary socialist philosophy and lyrics. Throughout their none-year history, they became one of the most influential and popular political groups in music.
Rage Against the Machine split up in 2000. The band’s bassist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello, and drummer Brad Wilk formed the supergroup Audioslave along with frontman Chris Cornell, former Soundgarden vocalist. In April 2007, the band performed together with singer Zach De La Rocha for the first time in the past seven years at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Rage Against the Machine drew their inspiration from early metallic instrumentation and rap acts, including Afrika Bambaataa and Public Enemy. Members of Rage Against the Machine had been offered large sums to reunite for performances and tours, but had turned the offers down. There have always been many rumors about their relations.
The rumors that the band could reunite at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival were circulating during the early 2007, and were finally confirmed on January 22. Rage Against the Machine was announced to be headlining the final day of Coachella 2007. The band’s reunion was described by Morello as a means to voice their opposition to the "right-wing purgatory" the US has "slid into" under the administration of George W. Bush.
In April 2007, de la Rocha and Morello united onstage to perform an acoustic set in Chicago at a Coalition of Immokalee Workers rally held in support of fairness in the fast food industry. This was followed by the scheduled Coachella show on April 29. Rage Against the Machine played in front of an EZLN backdrop to the large crowd of the music festival. In fact, their performance was widely considered the festival's most anticipated one.
4 more concerts are planned as part of the Rock The Bells Festival. While there have been some rumors of Rage Against the Machine’s full tour or permanent reunion since Audioslave broke up, a full tour of the band is not planned as of June 2007. Rage Against the Machine’s future is rather uncertain, however reports of performances planned as far in advance as December 2007 have circulated.
Rage Against the Machine has received several awards, including Best Metal Performance (1997) for “Tire Me” (Grammy), Best Hard Rock Performance (2001) for “Guerrilla Radio” (Grammy). The band has been nominated four times for the Grammy award for Best Hard Rock Performance (1997) for “Bulls on Parade”, Best Hard Rock Performance (1998) for “People of the Sun”, Best Metal Performance (1999) for “No Shelter”, and Best Hard Rock Performance (2002) for “Renegades of Funk”.
