Known for their fusion of Grateful Dead-style bluegrass rock, the music of Rusted Root band was influenced by Native American, Latin, African, and Middle Eastern music. The band is often listed together with other bands under the jam band label. However, they have somewhat rejected this kind of categorization.
The band was formed in 1990 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Two years later they released their first indie record together with Cruel Sun. The band’s main-label debut release was 1994's When I Woke.
It became a hit on radio and a platinum record. The release hit the top 40 in 1995, peaking at no.33. The band’s live shows were becoming increasingly popular. The group also decided to start working on contributions to the films Twister and Home for the Holidays.
The following Rusted Root’s studio album was Remember (released in 1996). It was followed by Rusted Root in 1998 and Welcome to My Party in 2002.
The latter was much criticised by the band’s fans, who are known as "Rootheads". They probably felt their favorite group's departure from tribal grooves to a more pop sound, which was an attempt to "sell out". The album Remember reached the Top 40 in the United States, while Rusted Root was supported by the use of the cover of The Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want". In 2004, a live double album was released.
In 2005, Rusted Root released their greatest hits album (by 20th Century Masters Collection). The band's most popular song is called "Send Me On My Way". It was used on the soundtracks of the movies Matilda, Ice Age, and the Boy Scouts of America, Order of the Arrow Philmont Trail Crew promotional video (released in the 1990s). Their songs have also appeared on the TV shows Homicide and Party of Five.
The group continues touring. However, their hard-touring days have ended, as they are devoting more time apart to their solo projects. Michael Glabicki, for instance, has released a solo CD entitled Uprooted as well as Patrick Norman (Digital World), Liz Berlin (AudioBioGraphical), and Jenn Wertz. The band’s drummer, Jim Donovan, released Revelation #9, which is a dance album, and two meditation CDs. He also teaches rhythm and drumming around the US. In 2003, Jim DiSpirito released Big Silence.
In June 2006, the band played at the Bonnaroo Music Festival held in Manchester, Tennessee. Rusted Root also performed the Molson Canal Concert Series in North Tonawanda, NY in September 2006. For their 2006 touring program, Jason Miller was asked to fill the position of Jim Donovan.
The current members of Rusted Root include Michael Glabicki (lead vocals, guitars), Jim Donovan (drums, percussion, vocals), Patrick Norman (bass, guitar, baritone, vocals, percussion), Liz Berlin (guitars, percussion, vocals), Jenn Wertz (guitars, percussion, vocals), John Buynak (electric guitar, percussion, flute), Jason Miller (drums, percussion).
