Smokey Robinson was born as William Robinson, Jr. in Detroit, Michigan's North End neighborhood and is a world renowned singer/ songwriter specializing in R&B and soul music. He has also gained popularity as a record executive, as well as a record producer. He was a well known figure in the Motown Records. He has recorded 37 Top 40 hits from 1960-87 for Motown Record.
In the year 1955, Robinson formed a group called the Five Chimes with his best friend Ronald White, and other Northern High School classmates. Guitarist Marv Tarplin joined the group a year later in 1958.
"Shop Around" released in 1960 was Motown's first number one hit on the R&B singles chart, its first million-selling hit single and also the first big hit for The Miracles. The other hit singles include "Who's Loving You" (1960), "You've Really Got a Hold on Me", "What's So Good About Goodbye and ,"I'll Try Something New" was released in 1962 while other hits like "Mickey's Monkey" and "Ooo Baby Baby" were released in 1963 and 1965.
