Nowadays they’re arguably most recognized as the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, but The Roots have long been one of hip hop’s most recognized and prolific groups, so it’s no surprise that they have plenty in store for us in 2013. In a relatively-surprising announcement, drummer ?uestlove recently let the world know that the band has recorded an album with the great singer-songwriter Elvis Costello, which is due out later this year. The band met Costello on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and while they originally intended to record only a few tracks, both parties loved the sound and kept it going. Then, as if that wasn't enough, ?uestlove announced name of The Roots’ 13th studio album, which will be called “& Then You Shoot Your Cousin.” The albums is due out in 2014.
And to round things out, the legendary Philadelphia crew announced the lineup for their 2013 Roots Picnic. The lineup this year is more diverse than years past as the group has been exposed to various acts with the Fallon show. The Roots Picnic is set to take place at the Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia on June 1st, and some of the acts that will take to the stage are Gary Clark Jr., Naughty By Nature, Robert Glasper, Solange, Trinidad James, Araab Muzik, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Hit-Boy, DJ Premier, and Grimes. The Roots tickets are on sale this Friday, January 25th, so make sure to claim yours and see them live at the picnic.
