About the Mercedes-Benz Championship

The Mercedes-Benz Championship is an introductory championship on the PGA golf Tour. Only the golfers, who are the winners of some championship on the schedule of the PGA Tour in the previous year, have an opportunity to take part in the event. The Mercedes-Benz Championship has been held at the beginning of January at Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, since 1999. Originally, the championship was staged in Las Vegas, Nevada, from 1953 until 1968. It took place at the Desert Inn Golf and Country Club until 1966, and later, at Stardust Country Club. Afterwards, the place for the event was moved to La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, for 30 years, after which the championship transferred to its present location in Hawaii. The first place award is one of the greatest ones during the Tour. Because of the limited number of participants in the event, the prize constitutes 20% of the general prize fund instead of the usual 18%. In the most recent 2006 championship, the first prize constituted $1,080,000 out of the prize fund of $5,400,000.
