In 1953, the Richmond International Speedway opened with only a track of dirt. The first win went to Lee Petty. Nine years later, the temporary lights were installed for racing. Permanent lights were put in the year of 1991. From its creation until 1988, the track was run as a half mile track and was changed to a ¾ mile track afterwards. The most wins at the Richmond International Speedway was and is still held by Richard Petty in traditional style as his family was the first to win this race.
